What is Merino Wool? Merino wool is a natural fiber grown by Merino sheep. It is thinner and softer than regular wool, making it comfortable to wear next to the skin. Wearing wool close to the skin offers numerous benefits.

The thickness of wool fibers is measured in microns. While the average human hair is approximately 60 microns, Merino fibers typically range from 13-24 microns. These Merino fibers are categorized by their thickness as follows:

  • Medium Merino (21-26 microns)
  • Fine Merino (17.5-21 microns)
  • Superfine Merino (15.5-17.5 microns)

What is Merino Wool Made Of? Merino wool is composed of proteins made up of amino acids and natural compounds. It is a natural, renewable fiber, with each sheep growing four to five pounds of wool per year. This fiber has evolved over time to help sheep thrive in harsh environments, with the ability to withstand temperatures ranging from 5 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit.

What is Merino Wool Good At? Merino wool excels at helping maintain a stable body temperature. When it's cold, the natural crimps and bends in its fibers trap air, providing insulation. When it's warm, the fibers quickly transport sweat away from the skin, keeping the wearer cool and dry.

How is Merino Wool Better Than Traditional Wool? Merino wool is super-fine and incredibly soft. A single Merino fiber is about one-third the diameter of a human hair. It is so fine that it bends out of the way when it touches the skin, preventing the prickly feeling associated with other wool fibers.
